The KPM Meissen Co was the first to commercially produce porcelain doll heads around 1840 as by-products of their established fine porcelain figurine and dishware business. The company had fine artisians and modelers on staff. Other manufactures began to produce fine doll heads also with modeled flowers, bows, snoods, bonnets & fancy bodice ribbons and artistry. These dolls were more ornamental and not play dolls. Infrequently, these dolls were given to a younger child for a Baptism or birthday and were held for safekeeping in a chest or display case.
